What is the Paleo Diet?
The Paleo Diet is a way of eating that focuses mainly on natural food that has undergone very little or no processing. It’s also known as the Caveman diet because it excludes many foods that people started eating after we began farming. The diet consists mainly of fresh vegetables and fruits, eggs, nuts and meat.
What can you eat on the Paleo Diet?
Essentially you are free to eat anything that we could hunt or gather way back in the day. The Paleo Diet allows for a wide array of vegetables, including root and starchy vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, seafood, healthy fats, eggs and fruits. Nuts and seeds are also allowed in moderation. There is also a broad focus on eating a variety of foods that are high in vitamins and minerals.
Many studies done on the Paleo Diet suggest that the human body has evolved very little in the past 40,000 years. Physicians are also increasingly convinced that the dietary habits adopted by Western society over the past 100 years may contribute to heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and some types of cancer. By adopting a ‘caveman’ diet, people remove the potentially harmful additions to their food and go back to eating the way that kept our ancestors healthy.
There are plenty of benefits that come with the Paleo Diet thanks to its unprocessed, largely whole-foods approach. Because the diet offers complete and balanced nutrition, it can help to boost the immune system, manage weight loss and improve digestion. By cutting out more processed foods, it also eliminates much of the preservatives, salt and sugars that are so often added to foods we eat today.
